TASTE OF SUCCESS AS RESTAURANT EXPANDS – AGAIN.

There’s a taste of success in one of the region’s leading home furnishings stores as a leading North West chef cooks up a massive demand.

The Wickentree Restaurant in Housing Units’ retail park in Failsworth has benefitted from a £50,000 investment to expand its kitchens five-fold, is adding 15% capacity to cater for huge growth in the number of diners and people taking afternoon tea, and has introduced a pager system to allow customers to wander the store until their table is ready.

Rick Dunkley, head chef and restaurant manager, has been with Housing Units for two years, but in that time the restaurant has had to be expanded twice.

Nick Fox, director of Housing Units, said: “Frankly, people don’t expect a restaurant of such quality in a home furnishings store, but after they’ve eaten here once, they just keep coming back again and again.

“We realised we needed to act and expand when earlier this year we started to experience more and more days when we had a queue for tables – and the kitchens started to look like an episode of MasterChef running at triple speed.

“Rick has done a fantastic job with a new menu, a new approach, and a truly fantastic take on breakfasts, lunches, snacks, multi-course meals and afternoon teas.

“The standards are such that The Wickentree has become a destination restaurant, not simply somewhere to take a break during or after shopping. Two secrets: the food is fantastic, and the parking is free.”

Many people are mystified about how the rating system for bedding actually works and end up getting overheated or left shivering in bed because they choose the wrong type of quilt.

Housing Units, one of the UK’s leading furniture stores, has produced a short video which explains the Tog system and how it can help – or hinder, if misunderstood – a good night’s sleep.

“The Tog system basically tells you how effective – both in terms of keeping your warm and keeping you comfortably cool – your bedding is. But while many think it’s simply a case of big duvets keeping you warm and thin ones keeping you cool, that’s not necessarily so,” said Nick Fox of Housing Units

“The Tog system, for instance, also allows for people who sleep alone or with their partner, because that can also have an effect upon heat retention – and can guide on how different Tog-rated layers can be combined or removed as the seasons change.”

Rick Dunkley, chef at The Wickentree Restaurant at Housing Units retail park in north Manchester, cracks some of the mysteries around how to make the perfect omelette in a short video.

“As well as generating some eggcellent yolks, er, jokes, eggs can help create some fantastic food providing you don’t scramble your approach,” said Rick.

“Omelettes can be simple, but easily without taste. I’ll demonstrate in a short video how just a few changes to the way you might ordinarily make an omelette can massively raise the eating experience. One tip? Always use white eggs – they genuinely make a better omelette,” said Rick.
